Description

66 Tele-snaps for the 27th episode of Thunderbirds, "Atlantic Inferno"

-SYNOPSIS-

"Lady Penelope invites Jeff to join her for a holiday at her farm in Bonga Bonga. Jeff is reluctant, but his sons convince him to take a break and Scott is placed in temporary command.

The World Navy is testing gyropedoes in the Atlantic Ocean. The captain of the World Navy flagship Atlantic warns the men on the drilling rig Seascape - Superintendant Frank Hooper, second-in-command Dick O'Shea, and radio operator Cravitz - that there will be underwater nuclear explosions but insists that this poses no danger to them. Two gyropedoes are launched at a target sub, but the second missile is a maverick and explodes on the sea bed. It ignites a gas field beneath the sea bed, throwing up a flame 200 feet high. Scott is in two minds about whether to involve International Rescue, but eventually decides to launch Thunderbirds 1 and 2.

Gordon takes Thunderbird 4 to the sea bed and caps the escaping gas with a sealing device, putting out the flame. Jeff is furious when he finds out that International Rescue has been involved, and tells Lady Penelope that he is abandoning his holiday. She manages to persuade him otherwise, but Jeff is clearly uncomfortable with the idea of leaving Scott in control.

In the Atlantic, however, the gas field remains ignited beneath the sea bed. The gas eventually breaks through again, shooting another column of flame above sea level and into the air. Feeling themselves in danger, Hooper and O'Shea call for International Rescue but, once bitten, Scott decides not to get involved and recommends that the Navy evacuate Seascape. Unfortunately, it will take the Navy two hours to get there. Another jet of gas bursts through the sea bed and the resulting wave fractures one of the rig's legs. Hooper and O'Shea go down in a diving bell to check the damage, but a third column of flame then explodes, causing the entire rig to slip further and the diving bell crashes to the sea bed. Hooper and O'Shea are trapped!

Scott launches Thunderbirds 1 and 2 and Alan, Virgil and Gordon fly to the danger zone. Time is running out, as the next place that the fire will spread to is Seascape's bore hole. Alan lands Thunderbird 1 on Seascape, while Gordon goes down to the diving bell in Thunderbird 4. Seascape collapses even further and Alan is forced to lift Thunderbird 1 from the rig to prevent it from sliding into the ocean. Gordon cuts through the diving bell's cables with Thunderbird 4's laser beam equipment before clearing the debris, attaching magnetic grabs to hoist the bell to the surface and getting clear just as Seascape explodes in flames, its the last crew members lifted to safety by the Navy.

Jeff returns to Tracy Island to supervise the rescue operation, but Scott refuses to grant him landing permission as Thunderbirds 1 and 2 are due back shortly, a command which pleases Jeff and Penelope. Back behind his desk at last, Jeff is glad to return to work - it is the only way he can relax!"

-NOTES-

Well, for the first episode of Season 2, the show's budget is clearly much higher. The details on the models, new sets, modified puppet designs, all look great. Virgil has a new voice actor, and the stories go up in quality, with some excellent action, drama, voice acting, and of course, lots of new and tasty explosions!

This episode makes up for "Security Hazard" by a mile!

As with most people, my first experience of this episode was on the Countdown to Disaster alongside Terror in New York City.

Excellent start to series 2 given the new puppets and sets plus Virgil's new voice actor. Even though its been a few years, do you still plan to cap the remaining episodes?
