Description

68 Tele-snaps for Episode 11 of Thunderbirds, "Sun Probe"

-SYNOPSIS-

“The Sun Probe, a rocket designed to take three solarnauts to the Sun and return with a piece of solar matter, is launched from Cape Kennedy and within a week has arrived at its destination. The mission goes according to plan at first, with the Probe Module released into a solar prominence and returning to the Probe Rocket with its acquisition. But as the solarnauts prepare to return to Earth, high radiation levels prevent the Probe’s control systems from firing the retro rockets. Cape Kennedy’s systems are also powerless, and the Sun Probe is on a collision course with the Sun!

Brains realizes that a powerful radio beam is needed to fire the Probe’s retros and Jeff decides to mount a two-pronged rescue: Thunderbird 3, with Alan, Scott and Tin-Tin on board, is launched into Space, while Virgil and Brains head for Mount Arkan in Thunderbird 2 with a powerful mobile transmitter. Sixty-Five hours later, Alan’s first attempt to reach the Probe with the safety beam fails and he and Scott realize that Thunderbird 3 must go much closer to the Sun than originally planned. A second attempt at closer range also fails, as does an attempt by Virgil and Brains from the Transmitter Truck at Mount Arkan.

Closer still, Alan makes a third attempt, with Tin-Tin boosting the signal from her console. This beam succeeds in activating the Probe’s retros and enables it to move away from the Sun, but Thunderbird 3’s retros now fail – Tin-Tin has collapsed in the extreme heat, leaving the signal booster turned on, sapping the ship of power. Brains realizes that he can jam Thunderbird 3’s safety beam signal with the mobile transmitter, but this requires a complex calculation on the mobile computer in Thunderbird 2. Unfortunately, Brains’ prototype robot Braman has been packed by mistake. However, Braman is able to complete the necessary calculations and the realigned transmitter beam successfully jams Thunderbird 3’s safety beam. The retros fire, and Thunderbird 3 returns safely to Earth.”

I’ve seen the episode a few times and as a result, I don’t think it’s as great as people make it out to be. I think 7/10 is a fair score.

Given as it was shot early on, I wonder if the lines for Solarnaut Camp were rerecorded by John Tate when he was hired towards the end of series 1? If so, who might have been the initial voice actor? Peter Dyneley? Matt Zimmerman? (Likewise, David Healy came to Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons probably to replace Paul Maxwell but could he have re-voiced lines for various characters in Point 783 and Manhunt?)
